Relax, it’s just for one night and it is one of the many community events that make Danville, CA such a great place to live.  Doggie Night in Danville traditionally kicks off the Memorial Day Weekend with a Thursday night event just for dogs and their owners.

The event features many pet service providers and organizations that support adoption, training and health services primarily for dogs, but other family pets as well.

What makes the event special for the canine crowd is a form of trick-or-treating usually known only by children on Halloween.  Owners of the lucky dogs are given a bag and a map of downtown Danville with participating merchant locations highlighted.  Dogs take their owners to the participating businesses where they receive a treat that sometimes goes straight into the mouth or into the bag to be savored later.

This is a good event for local businesses as well because many of the dog owners are introduced to their offerings and local restaurants with outdoor seating are usually filled to capacity by owners with their dogs sitting close by.

Weather was perfect this year for the event and our 4 ½ year old Scottish Terrier, Missy MacGregor, thoroughly enjoyed herself as she always does, but as you can see the event takes a lot out of the “short leggers” and they need a nap when they get home!

Shampooches in San Ramon offers professional pet grooming that makes my Missy MacGregor spiffy and she knows it. At least I think she does. Missy tugs at the leash to get into the door and races back with an attendant in a rush.  Perhaps it’s the warm bath and gentle grooming she’s looking forward to, but the way she comes strutting out when she’s all done makes me believe she loves her new “do”.

The staff of 7 professional groomers has an impressive combined experience of over 100 years. I’m quite sure this is a determining factor in the fact that ShamPooches has been voted “Best in the East Bay” by the Diablo Magazine for the past seven years. I know I’ve always been pleased with the cuts over the years.

Shampooches also offers self-bathing pet facilities for owners that want to bathe their pet, but don’t want to clean up after. This service includes the use an elevated tub for 45 minutes, warm water, tear less shampoo, brushes, towels, dryer and best of all, they clean up!

I can’t say enough to tell you how good the doctors are. In early 2000, another veterinarian diagnosed my Scottish Terrier (Holly) with a physical condition and wanted me to sign up for $4,000 in surgery. Looking for that perfect place to take your four-legged family member and let him/her run free? Missy MacGregor, the Scottish Terrier my life recently enjoyed her trip to Memorial Dog Park Run. This fenced, off-leash park is just over and acre and provides separate areas for small and large dogs. Missy thinks she is a B-I-G dog, so we joined the group of large dogs and owners. One dog in particular was very large, but well-behaved like all the others.

The park offers shade, benches and views!  From I-680 exit Bollinger Canyon Rd, go west and cross San Ramon Valley Blvd and the park on the left. There’s plenty of parking space.
