I Felt the Earth Move Under My Feet – Song Title or Situation? It Depends on Where You Live

I Felt the Earth Move Under My Feet. Oops, no, that was my rear, but I did feel it. Three times in a space of twenty minutes or so as a matter of fact. While waiting near the airport for a pickup last night my car vibrated. It felt like someone was gently but rapidly pushing on the rear fender to make my car tremble. I made the pick-up, drove home and fell exhaustedly into bed, only to wake up to news and more news coverage of earthquakes, both current and future

A mere 24 hours earlier, while writing an offer with a local client we shared a good laugh. I gave her the Statewide Seller and Buyer Advisory (SBSA) to review and acknowledge. As she was reviewing SBSA she threw down the paper while laughing. I asked her to please share (as I could use a laugh too). Reading out loud the first sentence of Article 4 in it’s entirety she quoted “Buyer and Seller are advised that California has experienced earthquakes in the past, and there is always a potential of future earthquakes.” DUH! To be fair, Article 4 does continue for several lines.

Our news is full of earthquakes today. The San Francisco Chronicle ran a front page article today detailing grim statistics that our Hayward fault is overdue for a “Big One”. ABC7news is reporting on television and on the web about the dozens of small quakes that have hit Dublin CA since Thursday afternoon. (Interestingly, these tremblors are not on the Hayward line, but on a small step-over fault).

Earthquakes do happen in California. Take this message to heart. Get your family earthquake preparedness plan in place. Collect the items for your family’s earthquake kit (or buy one), but just do it! Make sure your children know the family plan…places to go, places to expect to meet up. Parents, be extra sure your children know what to do in case of emergency. No, they are not to talk to strangers, but look for uniformed individuals to help. Tell them to pay attention to the drills at school. Every family should have a contact person out-of-state who can be the central information person if phones and other devices are not working or only working sporadically. Make sure the children have memorized their name and phone number. Lastly, it’s time to review your home  or rental insurance policy with your agent.
