More About San Ramon CA
Although many parents set their sites on the snazzy new Dougherty High School in San Ramon, California High School was ranked 250th best high school in the United States by Newsweek Magazine in June 2011. Dougherty Valley High School did not make the list.
The city of San Ramon is planning a new 40-acre downtown that will include a public plaza, hotel, independent cinema and a mix of residential units plus a new city hall, library and transit center as well as office space, to be developed by Sunset Development Co. The start of construction of the new City Center has been temporarily postponed due to the economic decline; however the project is fully approved and ready to move forward when economic conditions improve.
San Ramon CA offers a robust parks and recreation department and sponsors many recreational training events and sports opportunities to all ages. San Ramon is home to two aquatic centers, two public libraries, Dougherty Valley Performing Arts Center and over 50 parks & play areas.
Memorial Park was originally slated to be named Alta Mesa Park, but the City Council voted to change the name of the park while under construction. On September 11, 2001, Thomas Burnett of San Ramon CA was a passenger on board United Airlines Flight 93, which was hijacked as part of the September 11 attacks. He died when the plane crashed into a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Tom Burnett Jr. spoke to his wife by cell phone minutes before the United Airlines Flight 93 crashed in the fields of Pennsylvania. “We are all going to die” he told her “but there are three of us who are going to do something about it.” They did do something,…their actions saved innocent American lives on the ground.
Forest Home Farms Historic Park is a 16-acre park with 21 structures, including 2 historic houses and a Tractor Museum. It’s on the National Register of Historic Places. The Glass House Museum is a home built in 1877, that has been restored to its original beauty and fully furnished in period. Step back in time to the Victorian era to see what life was like in the San Ramon Valley for a middle class farm family in the late 19th century. During the December 2011 tour entertainment included sheep dog demonstrations, Victorian ornament making, tractor rides, carolers and a Victorian Santa. Other times during the year there are candle-making demonstrations, sheep-shearing demonstrations & more.
Major annual events in San Ramon CA include the Art and Wind Festival on Memorial Day weekend, the Fourth of July Picnic and Fireworks Show and the Primo’s Run for Education in October.
